How to read the dates of fabrications and lapses on different cells and batteries

Published on 12/12/2014

All cells and batteries currently on the market have a manufacturing or expiry date, see even both.

There is often confusion between these two dates which, depending on the technology and the brand can have different ratings.

For alkaline batteries

The deadline for consumption or expiry date, is the date on which there are more than 80% of initial energy in a new battery. It can therefore be used but will last less long. Currently the dates of storage are long enough and can reach 10 years.

The date of manufacture is noted in most cases with the month and year, preceded by "PD" Production date.

These dates are engraved or printed on the side of the battery.

For Lithium batteries

First of all, you should know that a lithium battery can be stored for 10 years 15 years without loss of capacity. For this reason there is very rarely the expiration date on lithium batteries which increases the confusion.

Some date are also inverted, one can see the notation MM/yy but also AA/MM depending on brands and models.

For lead batteries waterproof

Lead batteries usually have a date printed or engraved in the plastic. The notation is often reversed in yy.

There is no expiration date for lead batteries have a self-discharge important depending on the temperature, and the place of storage. That is why it is advisable not to store this type of battery more than 12 months without work.
